Dental Insurance. Is it truly even an Insurance? Dental insurance is more of an assistance plan than actual insurance, unlike with your medical providers. I have a whole typed-up section outlining the dental scam.
Unfortunately, most in-network dentists are unwilling or unable to spend the hundreds of thousands of dollars it costs to incorporate the latest technology into their practices. No dental insurance covers these procedures, given that the dental insurance platform is still stuck in the 1970s and has not evolved with the times or technologies other than collecting premiums, which are in the next millennium! The Health Insurance industry, especially the dental insurance industry, is the biggest legally endorsed scam perpetrated on the American public. Yet, no one with the authority to implement any change is willing to investigate this scam and institute change because none of these restrictions apply to them. They work with different benefits, where everything is covered, and we, the U.S. Taxpayers, pay for their treatment. So, if you think that having dental insurance is a significant benefit, think again. Your maximum yearly allowance of $500, $1000, $1500, or more is the same allowance allowed in about 1975 when dental insurance was first introduced. In the 1970’s, you could buy a new house for about $40,000 and a Toyota for about $4500.00! Considering inflation, dental insurance benefits should be about $70,000 annually! Will the insurance companies or your human resources departments ever tell you this? I think not. We do not believe in band-aid dentistry. Instead, we focus on lifelong dentistry. Have you ever considered what the most critical organ in the human body is? And which would be the second? When you think about it, the most crucial organ in the human body is the mouth, also called the oral cavity. Without a mouth, there would be no life! You would be dead within a week of your birth. Yet, the mouth, the gateway to life and the most critical organ to life is EXCLUDED from “health insurance!” None of the other medical disciplines included in “health or medical insurance,” such as cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, ENT, etc.- would even be necessary without a mouth.
The second would be “Vision” – your Eyes. And guess what? Again, the insurance companies, in their infinite wisdom, have determined that one’s eyes are also unimportant and, hence, typically not covered! How many individuals would visit a blind dentist, an ophthalmologist, a physician, or a surgeon? But again, just like the mouth, the eyes are neither essential nor a part of the human body, according to the genius minds of all the big insurance carriers, and excluded from “Health Insurance.” One has to realize that insurance companies' only goal is to make millions in profits and to pay their CEOs and the other worthless suits millions and millions of dollars in salaries and bonuses! This is from your premium money, and your treatment is being denied. This is the most significant legal and protected scam perpetrated on the public. All insurance companies, including health insurance companies, are the country's most prominent “legal thieves.” The CEOs, CFOs, etc, of each insurance company earn salaries over $10 million, some even in the high $20 million range. But it doesn’t end there! They then also get multi-million-dollar bonuses, thanks to you. But, unfortunately, we are beholden to them. To ensure they all remain Fortune 500 companies, they will deny, delay, and use every loophole imaginable to deny paying your claim. They spend millions of dollars annually on attorneys to create the legal language for their policies that only help them keep the premiums without paying out on the claim! They additionally pay millions to various lobbying organizations to continue to protect their interests. If you want quality, lifelong dental treatment, then look no further. Dental insurance is the biggest scam perpetrated on the public in this country. Yet, most people have been brainwashed by their HR departments, or via direct advertising, to believe that they are being looked after dentally and that their benefits and coverage are the most incredible thing, especially if you see an “In-Network Provider,” but more on the “In-Network” provider in another video clip.! Sadly, the truth has and never will be disclosed, but I will enlighten you about it now. Dental insurance started in the mid-seventies. In those days, they had set an annual maximum allowance for their insured, which was $500, $1000, or $1500 per year. Remember, in the mid-70s, you could buy a car for about $4000.00 to $6500, depending on the brand and model of the vehicle! You could buy a new Ferrari for $35,000-$60,000. New home prices were in the $27,000 to $45,000 range. Good luck buying a new car or a house for this price these days. The average 2024 car prices range from $45,000 to over $5 million! The average 2024 house price can range from $420,000 to over $150 million! Yet, in 2024 and beyond, your maximum dental benefit allowance will remain at $1000 and $1500, although your premium for coverage will increase. If they were to be ethical and honest to their premium-paying patrons, the $1000 maximum allowance should be about $60,000.00, while the $1500 annual maximum allowance should be about $70,000.00! If this were a healthcare policy, and the patient needed open heart surgery to replace four valves, would they say No? Sorry! You can only replace one valve per year! Yet, in dental insurance, you are limited to coverage of your annual allowance, which is preposterous! Your dental insurance company is not even remotely interested in you or your maintaining your teeth or your oral health. You have to decide how long you want to keep your teeth. If you want to keep them for life, then look no further. We specialize in quality, long-lasting dentistry for life. We never perform band-aid dentistry. We only specialize in painless, quality dentistry.

Why do dental insurance companies want you to see “In-Network” dentists?
Having been an in-network dentist for over 25 years and seeing first-hand the games insurance companies play regarding patient treatment is abhorrent, so I chose to become an out-of-network dentist! What do “in-network” and “out-of-network” essentially mean? When you are “in-network,” the insurance company determines what treatment you can and cannot receive. Their representatives have been instructed to deny quality care and change it to what the insurance company calls “LEAT” – the least expensive treatment alternative. Many insurance companies will not pay for composite (tooth-colored fillings) but downgrade it to an amalgam restoration. Amalgam is a material that was first introduced in 659 A.D. in China, then in 1818, modified by a French scientist to incorporate mercury, and was then introduced in 1833 in the U.S. as a restorative dental material! Since then, the material has been modified, but no recent enhancements have been made in amalgams in the past 50 years. Most first-world countries have denounced the use of amalgam restorations for the past decade or more. Yet the U.S. endorses it because insurance companies run the healthcare industry. Dental amalgam is the cheapest dental material available, costing less than a dollar per filling. In addition to being an inferior material, it requires the removal of so much natural healthy tooth structure to retain the restoration. Most of the crowns we do these days are on teeth that first had or still have amalgam restorations. In-network dentists, unfortunately, have to cut corners, recommend unnecessary treatment, use cheaper dental materials, and refrain from acquiring the latest technologies, as they will all be denied. Typically, “in-network” dentists only get about 30-65% for services rendered by insurance companies. And that, too, is based on their fee schedules and not the dentist's fee schedule. The patient has a nominal co-pay, and the dentist has a significant write-off! So, to keep an office afloat, one has to see 10-15 patients a day, have shorter appointments, and recommend treatments that are not necessary, or that would generate more income in that time slot – for example, an inlay versus a filling! One might get the dentist $60, while the other might call the dentist $300 or $400 from the insurance company for that 45-minute appointment. Sadly, these are not things patients know because they trust what the dentist says they need. Again, not all “in-network” dentists are like this. I never was, and I just had to write off $200,000 or more annually as insurance write-offs. However, with inflation and the economy, we had to break free from the “in-network” racket and educate the patient about the benefits of being seen by an “out-of-network” dentist rather than an “in-network” dentist. We do not believe in band-aid dentistry. Instead, we focus on lifelong dentistry. If you want quality, lifelong dental treatment, please call the Dentists at Twinbrook Dental Center at 301-468-9760.
Dentistry has evolved exponentially in the past 50 years. Dental insurance has remained stagnant, and they have no intention of changing it because it would cost them more. All that matters to them is that you continue making your premium payments. To explain the difference between “in-network” and "out-of-network" dentists in a plain, simplistic way. Insurance companies will always recommend that you see an in-network dentist by telling you that everything will be covered, etc., because that is the cheapest for them regarding reimbursement. In this case, the insurance company representatives earning $15 an hour will decide your treatment, per their denial instruction sheet, not your dentist, and then proceed to downgrade the recommended treatment by your dentist to the “least expensive treatment alternative, " abbreviated LEAT, or deny the treatment. They will also pay the dentist anywhere between 30-60% of their fee and not the dentist’s fee, causing the dentist to write off approximately 50% of the cost of the visit. Hence, to make their time more productive, they will always tend to recommend more expensive treatment so that the hour generates more income. With an “out-of-network” dentist like our office, we still work with your insurance company and do all the work necessary to submit the claims on your behalf. We will collect your deductible and estimated copay and await payment from the insurance company. If there is a balance, we will let you know at the end. The significant benefit of seeing a quality out-of-network dental practice such as ours is that the dentist decides your treatment, not a receptionist at the insurance company, who hasn’t the slightest clue about any dental procedure. Your insurance company has no say in the treatment you deserve and receive; hence, you will receive much better-quality care and less unnecessary treatment that you truly don’t need. We do not believe in band-aid dentistry. Instead, we focus on lifelong dentistry. If you want quality, lifelong dental treatment, please call the Dentists at Twinbrook Dental Center at 301-468-9760.
Not all Dentists and Dental Offices are created equal. Sadly, most people with dental insurance offered by their employers will refer to the directory provided by their insurance provider to find an in-network dentist. They will most often be seen by a dental hygienist, who will take the x-rays, perform the dental cleaning, and then call the dentist. The dentist will typically then make a brief visit, glance at the radiographs, take a quick look in the mouth, and then have the patient scheduled for any treatment that is obvious and also identified by the hygienist. The patient will often be told they need to return for deep cleanings. Deep cleanings earn the practice more money per hour than essential cleaning, which is essentially useless and old school. The modern literature has shown deep cleanings to be virtually meaningless with the advent of the dental Nd: YAG laser. Deep cleanings do not regenerate bone or produce new cementum or periodontal attachments. Everything essentially remains the same following the deep cleanings. Yet, this meaningless treatment is probably one of the most unnecessarily performed dental treatments. The Nd: YAG laser is an expensive piece of equipment that costs about $100,000 or more, and of course, dental insurance will never cover any procedure involving the word laser. When a certified trained clinician uses this laser for the treatment of a patient with bone loss and bleeding gums, this miraculous machine will stop the bleeding, start the formation of new bone, create new cementum on the roots, and allow for new attachments. Is this treatment expensive? The answer is Yes. Are the results immediate? Again, the answer is No! However, with a strict oral hygiene regimen that the provider prescribes, these patients will have healthy mouths again. Most in-network offices will not have expensive and innovative equipment such as this because they can’t afford to. Instead, they will continue to perform the same limited and outdated dental procedures taught in dental schools. Dentistry is one of the most technologically evolving medical specialties, focusing on conservative and efficient dentistry. Unfortunately, technology costs a lot of money for treatment, which insurance companies are unwilling to pay. So, they will continue paying for outdated and more invasive procedures as they are cheaper. We do not believe in band-aid dentistry. Instead, we focus on lifelong dentistry.
